5 THINGS I WISH EVERYONE KNEW ABOUT NUTRITION

There are so many different myths out there when it comes to nutrition and it can be super overwhelming when trying to get started on your fitness journey. Eat this, not that. Add this, cut that. None of this, none of that. Here are the top 5 things I wish everyone knew about nutrition!

  1. YOU NEED CARBS. You don’t need to replace your bread with vegetables. Your brain's PREFERRED fuel source is carbs. Give your body what it needs. This is where you get your energy. Stop restricting carbs. Your goal should be to eat anywhere from 30-45% of your total daily intake in carbs!

  2. There are no “magic” or “fat-burning” foods. There IS such a thing as the thermic effect of food, in which your body essentially burns calories by digesting food. There is no such thing as a “fat-burning” food, but all food requires energy (aka calories) in order to be digested. The digestion process starts in your mouth with your saliva, so as you eat, your body is using energy to digest the food! PS: protein has a higher thermic effect than carbs and fats!

  3. If you cannot stick to it long term, it’s not worth it. Go with a more sustainable option! You will end up back where you started. These BS diets will run you through a vicious cycle… “Oh, I’ll just do keto for a few months to lose the weight, then I’ll go back to eating normally again.” See, here’s the thing: Our bodies adapt to keep us alive. Your body is going to have to adapt back to what it was before, and you will more than likely put the weight back on. Instead of running for the quick fix, let’s prioritize putting in the effort and shooting for the long game, as it’ll be WAY more sustainable and more enjoyable.

  4. Your metabolism isn’t broken or damaged. It’s adapted. If you’re eating 1200 calories because you think your metabolism is broken, it’s time to make a change! Up your calories, allow your body to adjust and adapt to a higher intake, reap the benefits of more calories, and THEN if you want to go into a cut from there—go for it!

  5. Nutrition doesn’t have to be hard! You can eat the foods you want and still be successful. It’s about creating a healthy and sustainable balance and prioritizing YOU. How do you feel when you eat certain foods? If you feel good, eat more of that! Simple.
